Call for Papers: Restorative Justice

Call for papers:

The Eastern Society for Women in Philosophy invites papers on the topic of “Restorative Justice”, to be presented at the 2016 annual conference, to be held at the University of Houston in Houston, TX, on April 8^th & 9^th, 2016. For the purposes of this conference, we are defining the term ‘restorative justice’ as broadly as possible: as alternatives to traditional forms of punishment, in many different contexts.

All proposals in any topic are welcome, but The Society for Women in Philosophy, Eastern Division, especially welcomes proposals for 30-minute presentations on all topics bearing on the conference theme, including but not limited to:

·      Alternatives to mass incarceration

·      Practices of Restorative Justice in prisons

·      Judges’ and attorneys’ perspectives on sentencing, victim’s rights, and recidivism

·      Theoretical underpinnings of restorative justice, including ideas of trauma, punishment, healing, and forgiveness

·      International truth and reconciliation commissions

·      Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation

·      Processes and lessons of victim/offender dialogue

·      Alternatives to ‘Zero Tolerance’ and other traditional disciplinary forms in primary and secondary education

·      Domestic Violence and Restorative Justice

·      Feminisms and restorative justice

·      Mass social movements and restorative justice

·      Race and restorative justice

In efforts to create an intersectional and inter-disciplinary learning experience, the conference will prominently feature philosophers, but also include local criminal justice activists, community organizers, and legislators in Texas.  Harris County, where Houston is located, has been called one of “the epicenters of mass incarceration” in the U.S., and so it’s a place in need of collaboration between academics and community members on these topics.

We encourage papers from a wide range of traditions intersecting with this theme, including both analytic and continental philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Emotion, Phenomenology, Queer Theory, Disability Studies, Environmental Philosophy, Post-Colonial Studies, among others.

The committee will be in touch with decisions no later than the 31^st of January 2016. By submitting a proposal the author agrees to reserve publication of the conference paper for an edited collection, if the paper is accepted for presentation and if the proceedings are accepted for publication.
